The first shipment of parts of a Soviet-built reactor destined for Cuba’s first nuclear power plant has left Leningrad, the official Cuban daily Granma reported Tuesday.

The plant is being built in the central port of Cienfuegos. The initial stage, expected to be finished by the end of the decade, will have an output of 880 megawatts.

Cuba hopes to build three nuclear plants which, with its small but increasing oil production, should largely free it from dependence on Soviet oil supplies.
