Crews are almost ready to break into a tunnel where 27 people were killed in the Wilberg mine fire, and the recovery of their bodies could begin as early as Monday, officials said Tuesday.

Hershel Potter of the Mine Safety and Health Administration said the crews have bored new tunnels to the area where the Dec. 19, 1984, fire killed 26 men and one woman. The bodies have been entombed since rescuers were driven from the mine by the blaze and the entrances were sealed to smother the flames.
