Doctors report that Marc Buoniconti, 19-year-old son of former Miami Dolphin linebacker Nick Buoniconti, is paralyzed from the neck down and that his chances of recovering movement of his legs and arms are slim.
Buoniconti, a sophomore linebacker for The Citadel, was injured Saturday when he tackled fullback Herman Jacobs of East Tennessee State. He was flown by air ambulance from Johnson City, Tenn., to Jackson Memorial Hospital, which serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Miami.
Surgery will be performed when Buoniconti’s respiration stabilizes, “we hope within a week or so,” said Dr. Barth Green, professor of neurosurgery at the University of Miami.
