Italian President Francesco Cossiga, as expected, rejected Prime Minister Bettino Craxi’s resignation and directed Craxi’s five-party coalition to go before Parliament for a vote of confidence to end a crisis sparked by the Achille Lauro hijacking. Craxi, Italy’s first Socialist prime minister, agreed to move quickly to resurrect his coalition, which collapsed Oct. 17. He scheduled talks in Parliament on Monday, with the vote to follow.
