Gen. Chuck Yeager unveiled a plaque at Edwards Air Force Base commemorating the 38th anniversary of the world’s first supersonic flight. On Oct. 14, 1947, Yeager piloted the X-1 test plane when it was dropped from the bomb bay of a B-29. The plaque marked the spot where the X-1 was loaded into the mother ship for the historic flight. The dedication was part of an annual base show that attracted 500,000 people, according to a base spokesman. Show attractions included scores of Air Force fighters and bombers on display, and aerial performances by the Air Force Thunderbird precision flying team and the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team.
