Mexico Introduces New 20-Peso Coin Today
Mexicans will find a new 20-peso coin in circulation today as part of the government’s program to replace heavier and more expensive coins, the Banco de Mexico announced.
The bronze-on-aluminum coin is gold-colored and has an etching of Guadalupe Victoria, who became president after the nation became a republic in 1823.
Already this year the government has put new 5-, 10-, 100- and 200-peso coins into circulation.
The bank said that 500 million of the new 20-peso pieces will be minted in the next 12 months, for a savings of 4.5 billion pesos from what the same amount of the old coins would have cost to produce.
