Senate Again OKs Budget Plan

The Republican-led Senate today approved a balanced budget plan for a second time after refusing to go along with House-passed provisions that would exempt programs for the poor, elderly and veterans from possible spending cuts.

The 74-24 vote sent the measure back to the House, setting the stage for renewed high-pressure talks between the parties in the spotlight of the government’s worsening financial condition.
