Land mines believed to have been planted by separatist Tamil guerrillas in Sri Lanka killed seven policemen and four soldiers in two explosions, the government reported in Colombo, the capital. The policemen’s jeep struck a mine near the northeastern port city of Trincomalee. The soldiers were killed by a blast 20 miles north of the eastern state capital of Batticaloa. Government intelligence sources said the rebels are planning a major offensive in the Trincomalee area, despite a previously arranged cease-fire.
