The state Supreme Court sent letters calling on Gov. George Deukmejian, Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp and Senate and Assembly Democrats and Republicans to file responses to the State Bar’s plea that the court bail it out of its financial crisis. The crisis occurred when Assembly Republicans blocked passage of the Bar’s dues bill, and the Legislature went into recess in September. That left the Bar without authority to collect $18 million in dues from the state’s 87,000 lawyers. Faced with being forced to shut down by January, the Bar last week asked the court to authorize it to collect dues. The conservative Pacific Legal Foundation, representing Assembly Republican Leader Pat Nolan (R-Glendale), filed papers earlier this week saying the court has no jurisdiction to act.
