Assembly Minority Leader Pat Nolan (R-Glendale) and 11 other opponents of a State Bar of California proposal that it be allowed to collect annual dues from every lawyer in the state filed their objections with the state Supreme Court. The Bar, which claims that it is in danger of closing its doors by Dec. 31 unless it collects dues, asked the high court to grant such authorization after a dues bill was defeated in the Legislature. Republicans blocked passage, citing complaints that the Bar fails to adequately discipline lawyers who cheat their clients.
