San Diego Roundup : Padres to Play 31 Exhibition Games in 1986

The Padres will play 31 spring training games in 1986, including 12 in Yuma and two at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, team officials announced.

The Padres’ exhibition opener will be March 7, against California at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma. The Padres and the Angels will meet seven times this spring.

San Diego will also travel to Vancouver, British Columbia, for games against the Chicago Cubs on March 15 and 16.

The Padres conclude their spring training schedule with two games in San Diego and two in Las Vegas. They play host to the Angels on April 2 and San Diego State on April 3 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, then meet the Minnesota Twins on April 5 and 6 in Las Vegas.

UC San Diego, which outscored its opponents, 68-5, while compiling a 19-1 record, will play host to the NCAA Division 3 Midwest-Far West Men’s Soccer Regionals today and Sunday at UCSD’s Warren Field.

Claremont-Mudd (15-1-2), the only team to beat UCSD this season, will face St. Thomas of Minnesota (13-0-2) at 11 this morning before the Tritons meet Colorado College (15-7) at 2 p.m. The winners advance to the regional final Sunday at 1 p.m.

UCSD is led by freshman midfielder Robert Paterson, a Mira Mesa High School graduate who set a school record with his 33 points (16 goals, one assist) this season. Junior forward Greg Schwarz and sophomore forward Bubba Wingate have scored eight goals apiece.

The dates for the $200,000 Kyocera Inamori Golf Tournament, to be held at the Bernardo Heights Country Club in Rancho Bernardo, have been moved from April 16-20 to April 9-13. The earlier dates became available on the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. schedule when the J&B; Scotch Pro-Am in Las Vegas was canceled.

The second San Diego contest of the 1985-86 Western Surfing Assn. season will be Sunday starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Imperial Beach Pier. Top finishers will qualify for an invitational meet scheduled for Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Santa Cruz.

Padre first baseman Steve Garvey was presented with the Scripps Memorial Hospital Jessop Award in ceremonies connected with the hospital’s recent invitational golf tournament. Garvey was honored for his involvement with the community.
