UCSD, Claremont-Mudd Reach Soccer Final

UC San Diego beat Colorado College, 3-1, in a Midwest-Far West Regional semifinal soccer match Friday on the UCSD pitch.

The win put the Tritons (20-1) into today’s 1 p.m. final against Claremont-Mudd, which blanked College of St. Thomas (Minn.), 2-0, in the other semifinal Friday.

Claremont (17-1-2) beat UCSD, 2-1, in October and has beaten the Tritons in the playoffs the last two years.

Goals by Phil Kenney, a Mt. Carmel High School graduate, and Barry Thompson gave UCSD a 2-0 lead. Jim Grice scored for Colorado (15-8). A Colorado player gave UCSD its final goal when he kicked the ball into his own net with eight minutes remaining.

Hong Chang and Josh Quinones scored goals against St. Thomas (13-1-2).
