The Veterans Administration is making questionable disability payments for mental disorders to persons earning as much as $63,000 a year on the federal payrolls, internal auditors said. The Disabled American Veterans in Washington assailed the VA inspector general’s audit findings as “penalizing” veterans who rise above their disabilities to hold responsible positions. A sampling of 2,500 federal employees receiving veterans’ disability payments found that 80% were earning between $10,000 and $63,000 in full-time government jobs.
