Brea : Council Applications to Be Taken for Week
Residents interested in filling the seat left vacant by the death of Mayor Pro Tem Sam Cooper have until next Tuesday to apply for the position.
At a meeting Friday night, the City Council rescinded a city ordinance that set specific time limits for seeking applicants, conducting interviews and choosing a new council member. Instead, the council opted to follow state law, which calls for an appointment within 30 days without specifying time restrictions for each part of the process.
The local ordinance, with its time restrictions, created problems for the council. One of the deadlines, for example, fell on Thanksgiving Day.
If council members do not make an appointment by Dec. 6, they must call a special election, Assistant City Atty. Andrew Arczynski said Monday.
Cooper, 66, a longtime city official and former mayor, died of a heart attack last Wednesday.
