Wild monkeys have started attacking people in this northeast Indian city, biting more than 30 children and driving panic-stricken residents indoors, a wildlife official said Monday.

Assam state’s wildlife chief, P.C. Das, said the attacks started 10 days ago in Jalukbari, a suburb of Gauhati, capital of Assam.

Das said most of the victims were women and children and some monkeys had even broken into homes. But he said he did not know what caused the attacks.
