Man Announces He Will Donate Organs, Then Shoots Himself

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A man fatally shot himself in the head at University of Tennessee Hospital minutes after he walked in the emergency room and announced that he wanted to donate his organs.
William D. Raney’s kidneys and eyes were removed when he died Tuesday night about four hours after shooting himself, hospital spokeswoman Lisa McNeal said.
Police said Raney, 35, of Wartburg, Tenn., was taken to an examining room and momentarily left unattended when he first arrived at the hospital at 7:30 p.m. Minutes later, he shot himself in the mouth with a .38-caliber pistol.
