Vasily F. Garbuzov, Finance Minister of Soviet Union, Dies
Vasily F. Garbuzov, Soviet finance minister for the last 25 years, has died after a long illness, the official news agency Tass reported Wednesday. He was 74.
The brief report said Garbuzov died on Tuesday. It gave no other details of the death.
Western diplomats said Garbuzov’s death is unlikely to have a significant effect on economic policy as the Finance Ministry is less prominent in the Soviet Union than in many other countries.
The career economist was named finance minister in May, 1960, when Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev was in power.
