The World : South African Defies Edict

South African black nationalist figure Winnie Mandela, defying an order to return to the remote township to which she has been banished, headed for Cape Town to try to visit her jailed husband, Nelson, leader of the banned African National Congress. The deadline for her return to Brandfort, 235 miles south of Johannesburg, to which she was banished in 1977, passed Friday, and she is now subject to arrest. Nelson Mandela, serving a life sentence for treason and sabotage, is in a hospital recovering from prostate surgery.
