Fire Damages High School: A fire that broke out in a classroom at Newport Harbor High School Sunday afternoon caused an estimated $45,000 in damage, authorities said. A Fire Department dispatcher said an anonymous caller at 5:43 p.m. reported seeing smoke and hearing crackling sounds at the school at Irvine Avenue and 15th Street. Fire information officer Scott Allan said the blaze was brought under control at 6:37 p.m. and that flames were extinguished an hour later. There were no injuries. Structural damage was estimated at $30,000, and there was an additional $15,000 in damage to the building’s contents, Allan said. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
