Handling of Medvid Affair

Share

The danger from the radical right was evidenced in Jesse Helms’ attempt to keep the Ukrainian sailor here for further questioning. After his attempt failed, Helms stated:

“Once again, the State Department clearly decided it is more important to appease the Soviet Union than to allow a young man to have an unfettered chance for freedom.”

The misleading statement reveals the state of mind and unmitigated gall of Helms and those who adhere to the irrationality of avoiding peace efforts with the Soviet Union. The word “appease” should have been changed to “to seek peace with,” which would have reflected sincerely the intent of Helms. If he had his way to set the stage for questioning the Ukrainian sailor (with reporters and TV cameras), his anti-peace propaganda could have diminished the hopes for reconciliation and furthering the peace efforts at the summit.

It is tragic to realize how close Helms, his subpoena and the radical right came to the anesthetizing America with their venom. Fortunately, their salvation was short-lived.
