Gov. George Deukmejian, Assembly Speaker Willie Brown and Republican leaders of both houses called on the state Supreme Court to refuse to let the State Bar collect $18 million in dues next year from the state’s 87,000 lawyers. They said the dues dispute should be resolved by the Legislature. The Bar says it will have to go out of business unless the court acts this month to bail it out of its financial crisis. Assembly Republicans, contending that the Bar has not adequately disciplined errant lawyers and that it is increasingly involved in political activity, already has blocked passage of a bill authorizing collection of the dues in 1986.
