Sen. John P. East (R-N.C.) has been hospitalized for tests and observation after the discovery of a low white blood cell count during a routine examination, an aide said Tuesday.

The aide, Jerry Woodruff, said it was not known if the problem was related to the thyroid condition that hospitalized the senator earlier this year. He said it had not been determined how long East, 54, would remain at Georgetown University Hospital.
