Liberia Slates Trials for Rebels
Politicians and soldiers detained in connection with last week’s attempted coup in Liberia will be put on trial “immediately,” military leader Samuel Doe said today.
A presidential statement, broadcast by Liberian radio stations monitored here, said politicians would be tried by civilian courts and soldiers by a special military court. It did not identify those charged. Some of Liberia’s most prominent politicians were rounded up after last week’s bungled coup led by Brig. Gen. Thomas Quiwonkpa, who was later killed.
