Mrs. Bush Opens Yule Season

WASHINGTON —
Second Lady Barbara Bush officially opened the holiday season in the nation’s capital today by placing the main ornament atop the national Christmas tree near the White House.
She was hoisted in a cherry picker to the top of the 30-foot living Colorado blue spruce, which stands on the Ellipse between the Washington Monument and the executive mansion, and carefully secured the 60-inch red-and-gold ornament to the tree as a slight drizzle began to fall.
