Health Secretary Margaret M. Heckler will announce government approval today of a new drug to treat Wilson’s disease, a rare inherited disorder that is fatal if untreated, the Food and Drug Administration said. An FDA spokesman said the drug, Cuprid, or trientine hydrochloride, is designed for the 100 or so Wilson’s disease victims in the United States who cannot tolerate or who do not respond to the only other drug on the market for the disorder. Wilson’s disease is characterized by the body’s inability to excrete excess copper.
