Papers Picketed in Contract Dispute

Share

About 400 San Diego Union and Tribune employees picketed Tuesday in front of the building that houses both newspapers to protest stalled contract talks between the union that represents the workers and the papers’ management.

The employees, represented by the Newspaper Guild, have been working without a contract since June, when the old one expired. The guild at the Union-Tribune represents about 1,050 workers, from reporters to clerks. The papers, owned by Copley Newspapers, are represented in the talks by an in-house team of managers headed by Oliver Peter, director of industrial relations.

Tuesday’s protest was to air the union’s displeasure with the lack of progress in the negotiations, said John Edgington, administrative officer of the local unit. On Sunday, guild members authorized a strike if the two sides cannot agree on a new contract, but no strike date was set. Edgington said that salaries remain the main issue.

Peter could not be reached for comment Tuesday, and Gary Goss, general manager of the Union and Tribune, declined comment.
