After 10 years as superintendent of the ABC Unified School District, Eugene Tucker, 56, has accepted a similar post with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.

Tucker said Wednesday he will formally ask the ABC school board to release him from his contract, which expires in June, 1988. He said he would ask ABC trustees during their regular meeting Monday for permission to become a consultant to the Santa Monica-Malibu district in January. The move would allow him to spend a portion of his time at both districts until the end of the school year in May, Tucker said.

Tucker was hired by ABC in 1976 from the Coachella Valley Unified School District where he was superintendent. His salary at the 10,000-student Santa Monica-Malibu district will be an estimated $80,000 annually. It has been about $76,000 at ABC.

Tucker will replace retiring Supt. George Caldwell. Tucker was the unanimous choice and was ranked as one of the top 150 applicants by a majority of a 26-member advisory committee aiding in the selection of a superintendent, said Connie Jenkins, Santa Monica-Malibu school board member.
