Taxi drivers Wednesday began a boycott of London’s Heathrow airport to protest a 70-cent levy on fares, leaving travelers to use public transport for the 20-mile journey to Britain’s capital.

Drivers said they will refuse to pick up passengers at the airport, one of the world’s busiest, until the levy for the use of taxi stands is lifted.

“The British Airports Authority are holding the passengers to ransom,” said a spokesman for the taxi drivers, who Tuesday night voted overwhelmingly to boycott until their demand is met.
