Five prominent Liberian opposition politicians detained after a coup attempt earlier this month have been released, presidential spokesman Patrick Kugmeh said Wednesday.

He gave their names as Edward Kessely of the Unity Party and Gabriel Kpolleh of the Liberian Unification Party, presidential candidates in last month’s controversial election, and three other party opposition figures--Jabaru Carlon, the Unity Party’s vice presidential candidate; Carlos Smith, the party chairman, and Leslie Greene, vice presidential aspirant of the Unification Party.

However, Kugmeh also said that Jackson Doe, presidential candidate of the principal opposition Liberia Action Party, and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a renowned economist who won a Senate seat in the elections, are still being investigated.
