Plans Begin Shaping Up for Permanent Museum

Plans to build a permanent nautical museum in Newport Beach are slowly shaping up. Early next year, museum founders will begin refurbishing the Balboa Power Squadron building on Balboa Boulevard to house the museum’s basic collection of the late Arthur Beaumont’s paintings, lithographs, drawings and a library of boating books, periodicals and videotapes.

Ultimately, founders envision permanent museum quarters of 12,000 square feet to be built on city property on the Balboa Peninsula. The Newport Beach Nautical Museum was incorporated as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization in June of 1983. Last July, about $30,000 in museum funds were raised during a benefit auction. Additional funds will be sought during a membership drive, with costs ranging from $35 to $500.

Meanwhile, organizers say they need donations of paint and carpeting to fix up the old power squadron building.

Sailing Notes The Boat Maintenance Workers Christmas Ball & Benefit will be held Dec. 7, from 5-10 p.m. at Crows Nest Yacht and Ship Brokerage, Balboa. Admission is $15. The Crows Nest is located on Balboa Boulevard behind the Crab Cooker restaurant. One doesn’t have to be a boat maintenance worker to attend. All proceeds will benefit COPES (Child or Parent Emergency Services) in Orange County.

The Southern California Speedboat Club, Inc., Tustin, has received Coast Guard approval for its annual Parker Thanksgiving Regatta to be held between 6 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Nov. 29 through Dec.1 adjacent to La Paz County Park. Coast Guard officials said the event will have approximately 60 boats 13 to 20 feet in length that could pose a hazard to navigation. Vessels may not go through the regulated area without clearance from a patrolling law enforcement vessel or an event committee boat.

Similar Coast Guard approval was given to the Havasu Sports Federation, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., for its Lake Havasu Classic of about 50 tunnel and pleasure/modified V-bottom outboards, 16 to 20 feet, to be held Nov. 27 through Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Skipper Dave Ullmam, with crew Craig Fletcher and Keith Kilpatrick, aim to defend Balboa Yacht Club’s racing reputation at the San Diego Yacht Club’s Balboa Challenge Race Dec. 8. It’s a noon start at SDYC. Spectator boats are available.

Georgs Kolesnikovs, of Newport Beach, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming BOC around world Challenge race. However, he says he’ll be doing the Multihull Challenge 1986-87 Singlehanded Race Around the World in his multihull Great American. This multihull circumnavigation will be the first ever for catamarans and trimarans.

In fact, Kolesnikovs is the race’s founder and organizer. The race will start Aug. 30, 1986, at Los Angeles and end there. The course is around the world by any route, leaving the three main capes--Horn, Good Hope and Leeuwin--to port. Seaworthy sailing yachts 40 to 60 feet in length, and having more than one hull, may qualify for entry. Additional information is available from Great America Media Inc., Newport Beach.
