Four children and a father died during the night in a mountain apartment, asphyxiated by carbon monoxide, authorities said Saturday.

A sixth person was hospitalized in stable condition.

El Dorado County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dan Price said the deaths were under investigation but he declined to say whether detectives suspected foul play.

The cause of death was determined after an autopsy. Price said propane is commonly used in rural mountain areas for heating.

The boys’ mother, Cindy Lynn Bospflug, 22, of Placerville, was in stable condition at Marshall Hospital in Placerville.
