The Region : Talks in Market Strike Collapse Again

Negotiations in the 28-day strike-lockout at seven major Southern California supermarket chains broke down again despite the efforts of a new top-echelon federal mediator. Gayle Wineriter, special assistant to the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, flew back to Washington when bargaining ended after just two hours--with no new meetings scheduled. Meanwhile, union officials said they have collected $1 million to finance an advertising and public relations campaign aimed at bringing their side of the dispute to public attention.
