A federal judge today blocked the execution of condemned killer Elliott Rod Johnson, just 10 hours before he was to die by injection for murdering a jeweler during a robbery.

U.S. District Judge Howell Cobb issued the stay after meeting with Johnson’s attorney, Sam Dunn, who claimed the convicted killer received ineffective legal counsel during his trial. Johnson, 26, was convicted of capital murder in the April 8, 1982, shooting death of jeweler Joe Angel Granado, 67.
