Margaret (Peggy) Goldwater, wife of Sen. Barry Goldwater, was reported in satisfactory condition Monday after her left leg was amputated.

The surgery was performed on Sunday at Good Samaritan Medical Center after two arterial-graft operations failed to cure circulation problems, aides to the Republican senator said. The leg became infected because of the poor circulation and was amputated at about mid-thigh. A large blood clot that moved from her heart to an artery in the abdomen caused the circulation problems, the aides said.
