San Fernando Moves to Rezone Airport Land

Share

The San Fernando City Council, in an attempt to woo commercial development, has voted to begin rezoning a 30-acre parcel in the closed San Fernando Airport.

By rezoning the land for commercial use, the city hopes to attract a developer to build a small shopping center on the property, City Administrator Don Penman said.

The council on Monday asked the city staff to commission an environmental impact report and plan public hearings on the proposed zone change.

The land is now zoned for quasi-public uses, such as schools, airports or government buildings.

Lucky Stores Inc. bought 52 acres of the land from the city last month with the intention of building distribution warehouses.

Lucky officials have indicated that they would consider selling 30 acres back to the city, although no formal agreement has been reached.

The rezoning is expected to take four to six months.
