Local News in Brief : Slow-Growth Advocate Leary Chosen as Agoura Hills Mayor

The new Agoura Hills City Council on Monday night unanimously selected Vicky Leary mayor and Fran Pavley mayor pro tem.

Leary and Pavley, along with new council members Jack W. Koenig and Darlene McBane, are expected to try to slow development in the 3-year-old city.

Ernest Dynda, the fifth council member, is considered to favor development.

Pavley, who sought reelection on a slow-growth platform, was top vote-getter in last month’s election. Koenig and McBane campaigned for similar controls. Former Mayor John Hood, who had also been an advocate of growth, was ousted from the council by voters.

The swearing-in for the new council, which saw Hood and Carol Yeager-Sahm relinquish their council seats, was without the acrimony that marked the last days of the council election.

Leary told an audience of about 120 that she will seek a ban on private meetings among developers, City Council and planning commission members.

She said there were several such meetings between city officials and developers of a controversial industrial park that prompted protests by homeowners and the campaign to topple incumbent council members.
