A bicyclist riding home from work was struck and killed Wednesday by a hit-and-run driver, who just missed hitting the victim’s companion who was riding beside him.

Police said Estephan Resendiz, 23, of Santa Ana was hit by a car at about 4:30 a.m. while riding in the 200 block of Harbor Boulevard. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Resendiz, a maintenance worker, and Jose Espinoza, 23, the other bicyclist, had just gotten off work and were riding southbound when a car also traveling southbound struck the victim and narrowly missed Espinoza, Sgt. William Hill said.

The car slowed but continued on and was last seen driving west on 1st Street, Hill said. The vehicle was described as an early 1980 mid-size model, medium blue and with probable right-side damage, he added.

Investigators believe that the driver of the car may be employed near the scene of the accident and have asked that employers whose workers begin their jobs between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. notify the city’s traffic division at (714) 834-4280.
