On a day of public campaign-style appearances in the Riverside area followed by a private fund-raising dinner in Palm Springs, Gov. George Deukmejian called on Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley--his likely opponent in next year’s gubernatorial election--to take a stand on the Los Angeles City Council resolution declaring the city a sanctuary for political refugees from Latin America. Deukmejian said he opposes the measure, because it sends “a very poor signal” to law enforcement agencies charged with enforcing immigration laws. Bradley’s press secretary, Ali Webb, responded that, while the mayor has no position specifically on the resolution, he favors federal legislation that would allow aliens who claim to be political refugees to stay in the United States for two years.
