Hartmeier, Walen Are Most Valuable Bruins

Guard Mike Hartmeier and defensive tackle Mark Walen received the Henry R. (Red) Sanders Award as UCLA’s Most Valuable Players Thursday night at the Bruins’ football banquet at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Walen, the Pacific 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, also shared the N.N. Sugarman Award for leadership with guard Jim McCullough.

The awards:

Charles Pike Memorial Award for outstanding scout team player--fullback Otieni Pahulu (offense), defensive tackle Mike Lodish (defense); Jack R. Robinson Memorial Award for senior scholarship--long snapper Terry Theodore; N. N. Sugarman Award for Leadership--guard Jim McCullough, defensive tackle Mark Walen; Captain Don Brown Memorial Award for most improved player--quarterback David Norrie, tackle Robert Cox, linebacker Steve Jarecki, cornerback Chuckie Miller; John Boncheff Jr. Memorial Award for rookies of the year--tailback Eric Ball, linebacker Carnell Lake; Kenneth S. Washington Award for outstanding senior--placekicker John Lee, linebacker Tommy Taylor; George W. Dickerson Award for outstanding offensive play vs. USC--tailback Gaston Green, flanker Karl Dorrell; Donn Moomaw Award for outstanding defensive play vs. USC--linebacker Ken Norton, free safety James Washington; Paul I. Wellman Memorial Award for all-around excellence--split end Mike Sherrard, long snapper Scott Franklin, strong safety Craig Rutledge; Henry R. (Red) Sanders Award for most valuable player--guard Mark Hartmeier, defensive tackle Mark Walen.
