A man who served 10 years in prison for killing two sailors announced Friday that he will run for governor.

Stephen Robertson, 38, a state mail clerk, said he will run as a Democrat in a bid to unseat Republican Gov. Edward DiPrete.

He was convicted of shooting two sailors in a Newport restaurant in 1967 and was sentenced to two concurrent life terms at the state prison. Robertson, who said he shot the men after they threatened an elderly man, was paroled in 1977 after state legislators and prison wardens testified on his behalf.
