Pacific Storm Brings Rain, Hail and Freezing Temperatures
Frigid temperatures plaguing Southern California turned rain showers into pea-sized hail from Seal Beach to Yorba Linda Tuesday as a swift-moving Pacific storm swept across the western and northern parts of Orange County.
Hail flurries and thundershowers also hit Sunset Beach, Los Alamitos, La Palma, La Habra and Brea. But they were so brief that only traces of moisture were reported, the National Weather Service said.
Forecasters called for a decreasing chance of scattered showers this morning, clearing by mid-afternoon, with highs in the mid-50s and gusty northerly winds to 30 m.p.h.
But a high-pressure ridge extending from southern Alaska into the Pacific Ocean should keep a daytime chill in the air and force nighttime temperatures to near freezing levels until later in the week, according to the weather service.
The mercury plummeted to 32 degrees in San Juan Capistrano early Tuesday, nearing the 1972 record low of 31 set for a Dec. 10 in the city of Orange.
