The foreign trade deficit soared in the third quarter.

The government reported that the nation’s merchandise trade deficit rose to a record $33.1 billion in the July-to-September period. The deficit for the third quarter topped the old record of $30.9 billion set in the October-to-December period of 1984 and was 15.9% higher than the $28.6-billion deficit reported for the second quarter of this year.
