Flag-Snapping Winds Sweep County
Winds streaming south from Alaska and intensified by an eastward sweeping storm were expected to continue buffeting Orange County today.
The National Weather Service said winds gusting to 30 m.p.h. raked the county Wednesday. Breezes were clocked at 23 m.p.h. at the Civic Center in Santa Ana, where banners at the Avenue of Flags snapped off and on throughout the day.
The winds came from the north and gained intensity when they met the eastward sweep of a low-pressure storm system that dumped snow on Southern California mountains early in the day.
High temperature in the county was 61 degrees in Newport Beach and San Juan Capistrano, which recorded one-hundredths of an inch of rain overnight.
Santa Ana posted the state’s warmest low temperature--47 degrees--while the rest of California shivered.
Forecasters predicted warmer temperatures into the mid 60s under mostly clear skies today, with winds gusting to 30 m.p.h. and decreasing at night.
