Stabbing Hurts 2 Students Near Van Nuys School
Two Grant High School students were stabbed by two schoolmates across the street from the Van Nuys campus Monday in what Los Angeles police and school officials believe was a gang-related fight.
Two boys, 16 and 17 years old, were stabbed in the upper body shortly after 7:45 a.m. Police were seeking two other Grant students, also 16 and 17, who were identified by witnesses as the assailants.
The injured students were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. The 17-year-old was hospitalized in serious condition. The 16-year-old was transferred to County USC-Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition with a stab wound in the back.
School principal Bob Collins said the victims and suspects were bused to the school from Central Los Angeles. Because they are juveniles, police and school officials would not release their names.
Lt. Al Durrer said the fight broke out on school grounds minutes after the students stepped off a school bus. The suspects chased the victims across Oxnard Street to the Tujunga Wash drainage channel, where police said the stabbings occurred. The suspects then fled on foot.
About a dozen students witnessed the fight, Collins said.
Police have information linking the stabbings to a weekend gang confrontation in Central Los Angeles, Durrer said.
Collins said the school will have extra school police officers and staff supervision next week in case of further violence.
