South El Monte : Metal Buildings Decision

Share

The South El Monte City Council tonight is expected to consider whether to enforce an ordinance that requires more than 200 metal-sided buildings to be removed or modified by April 1, 1986, or adopt a more lenient amendment applying only to metal walls visible from public rights of way.

The ordinance was adopted in 1966 and gave property owners 20 years to upgrade or remove the buildings, City Manager Raul Romero said. Despite the passage of time, more than 200 metal-sided commercial and industrial structures remain.

The proposed amendment would require that metal walls visible from public rights of way be removed or covered with a combination of non-metal materials and fencing, Romero said. The council has yet to determine a deadline for changes required by the proposal, Romero said.
