La Verne : Gravestones Toppled

Share

About 25 gravestones in La Verne Cemetery were toppled, probably by mischievous youngsters who occasionally play there, according to Lito Felipe, an administrator for La Verne Cemetery Corp. None was broken, and all have been replaced, Felipe said.

Police Capt. D. F. Griggs said he has ordered increased patrols of the area to prevent further vandalism. Griggs said nighttime visitors are chased out of the cemetery by police about once a month.

“We’ve chased lovers out of there,” Griggs said. “Once in a while young guys go in to drink beer. This is normally the type of thing done by juveniles, but it hasn’t been an ongoing problem.”

The five-acre cemetery is located on B Street. Felipe said it has been there since the 1920s and contains 200 to 300 markers.
