Curators of the Norman Rockwell Museum have kicked off a fund-raising campaign for a new museum and gallery to house the American artist’s paintings and prints.

The goal is to raise $5 million in a national campaign. Funds raised locally will be used to restore the manor house of a 40-acre Stockbridge estate.

The manor house will house the museum’s new offices, said Lila Berle, museum board president.

Curators plan to move Rockwell’s studio to the estate early next year. The studio, which will overlook the Housatonic River, has been closed to the public since Rockwell’s death in 1978.
