Indonesian bootleggers who sold pirate recordings of the Live Aid charity rock concerts will give $30,000 as a Christmas present to starving Africans, a minister said.

Justice Minister Ismail Saleh told reporters he summoned the pirate tape barons to his office after Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof told a London press conference that 1.5 million Indonesia-made copies of the summer concert had been sold for about $3 million.

The bootleggers intended all along to donate money from the sales to help famine victims in Africa, Saleh said.

“They had been waiting for the right time to give the money. They have now chosen Dec. 25th as appropriate,” he said.

The bootleggers withdrew “Live Aid,” “Band Aid” and “USA for Africa” recordings from shops and stalls earlier this week.
