La Palma : Students Win Funds for Drama Department

Share

Decked out in homemade reindeer outfits, including one topped off with a yarmulke, teen-agers from John F. Kennedy High School went before the City Council last week to make--again--their pitch for money.

After debating whether giving the school money for its drama department would open the gate to other schools’ requesting the same, the council voted 3 to 2 to donate $1,000.

“(I) see it as a never-ending dip into the pool,” said Vice Mayor Richard Polis, who along with Councilman Dan Collins voted against the proposal.

The teen-agers, who were turned down by the La Palma council once before, were more successful with the Cypress City Council. The Cypress council allocated $2,500 toward the school’s new theater after the students showed up at a council meeting last month and performed a scene from “West Side Story.”

With La Palma’s $1,000 contribution, the school’s drama department has raised about $8,000 toward its goal of $30,000 to convert a room into a small theater.
