Cal State Northridge has been reprimanded by the NCAA for violating a regulation prohibiting athletic tryouts.
The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions said it determined that the school’s former head football coach, Tom Keele, conducted a tryout for about nine punters last December.
Frank Remington, chairman of the Infractions Committee, said that Keele “acknowledged sole responsibility for the violation.” Keele was fired Dec. 6.
The penalty would preclude the new head coach from any off-campus recruiting until Jan. 1, a delay of about one month in the normal off-campus recruiting period. The university, however, has not named a new head coach. Assistant coaches are not prohibited from recruiting.
